After two months on a boat, you build up quite a bit of creative energy apparently. I just got back to Japan yesterday, and I wanted to make sure to catch up on my promise of working on the duel disk. While I was gone I got a lot of requests and support for it, thanks to all of you for the good kind words….
So today I went to several stores around here (since there is no Wal Mart or Home Depot), creativity had to play a big role in this engineering project. It started out with opening up a keyboard, I was hoping that would work because I had never done it before. After piles of scraps later, and enough duck tape to make MacGyver proud, I had something workable. Stay up to date with the yugioh duel disk project and hologram projects with the newsletter. Watch the video below to see what one afternoon brought…
Watch the whole Duel Disk creation process as it’s being done.
What’s next?
- Hooking it up with the hologram system.
- Getting it to connect to the vision recognition database.
- Making it look more like a duel disk.

Great work, will it truelly show and spells/traps?
will the monsters be 3d?
did you finished the 3d database?
what about the holographic system?

The trap/spells will probably start out showing the cards themselves.
The blue eyes model is 3d, when it is projected, it will be 2d but look 3d unless you are looking right from th side.
I won’t be completing the 3d database, most likely the cards themselves will be projected for the ones that models aren’t available yet. Most likely the only way to get all them as models in the database would require a lot of models submitted by the community, will try and find ways to get more models without spending thousands.
The holographic system will be shown soon, it is very cool. Can’t wait to show it.

yes you are the best man!
but , when you say cards themselves you mean like in the anime right? because they was shoing first the card (the big card) and then the effect…
but i recomend you to first make the cards as big cards so the opponents will be able to see the card and then the 3d models and after some time the animations. but now the important thing is to make it and then develop it to this level… you should make an update system first so the users will be able to load the 3d models and then the animations.
*animations will be made at the end, i am not pressing you to make them so i only recomend…
i am adding a 10/10 to this project when it will be ready

Ya Denis,
Basically this project will go as far as the technology let us, and as far as the people who want it will take it.
The first version will probably be very basic, but like other things, maybe it can evolve into that full dueling system like the show.
Right now I’m working on the holograms themselves, will have an update on that as soon as it’s ready.

do you thik that you really can do this alone?
then good luck, but you should know, it will take a miracle for you to succeed.

This might be a little hard to explain but here is an idea for choosing what type of monster to play. Have you tried some form of voice command like they have for phones to search for something. If you need me to explain this just reply. P.S I hope this helps.

Ya that is something I’ve looked at, it’s pretty expensive for a good sdk and it adds the cost to every duel disk to use it. Might be an option later.

haha, thats the spirit!
+Good Luck for this part of your project!

This is wonderful! Take your time, you want this to come out PERFECT!

Thanks for the support. I’ve always been a shoot first redirect mid-flight kind of guy. So I can tell you it probably won’t be perfect right away. If the community here has enough interest for a period than we can probably get it there eventually though.

WOW!!!!!!! Christian this is truly impressive work!! This is probably the most farthest, most clever, devoted idea for this I have ever seen in my entire life! I always wanted a duel disk with holograms but over the years i gave up but now evidently technology and ideas are expanding so this could be possible! Wow! When do you think this would be up and running? Even if its just a prototype but even the built structure of this looks promising ^_^ How far along this project are you? I would LOVE to see this dream become a reality! This could like seriously revolutionize the card game, heck, it could be like a global sport or something xD Good job! keep up the amazing work!

Thank you Jamey. As soon as I have more free time I can finish it up and release it.

Hey what about the movement of the holograms will they be all cheap looking or actual 3d?
And what about all the thousands of models needed how long will that take?
Oh and most important will it be released to the public?

Hi Sauron,
The movement is still up in the air, with the holograms still being worked on and always improved. I’m not sure how much movement there will be initially.
The thousands of models is up to whoever wants to create them as that task is far too big for one person. I’ve talked with a couple people who may be interested in working on them, but I think a large public place where anyone can contribute models would be a good idea.
Your last question absolutely I plan to release how to build your own duel disk with needed parts and step by step instructions early next year hopefully.
[Reply]
So let me see if I have this correct: Your not necessarily planning on selling the duel disk but you plan on finishing the model and giving people step by step instructions how to build one right? Also my other question is, as of right now, what can the duel disk do right now? Cause there arent any video updates and I know your really busy with things and I was just curious ^_^ keep up the amazing work!!!

Yes, I don’t own the rights to sell it, but I do plan to release it with step-by-step instructions so you can build it.
What can it do right now? Nothing! What can it do in a couple months? Hopefully most things it can do on the show (Read cards, match database, etc).

this sounds like an excellent idea dreams go as far as you can follow them i just want to say great work and do you think the duel disk can automatically shuffle cards

yea, it’s almost a reality. Auto card shuffle? not duel disk 1.0, a small chance it could be added in the future, but it doesn’t give very much functionality for the $$ value.

hy man!…it has been a while since i’ve last heared anything about this great project…so i’m kind of worried…is it still up?…i now everyone in pushing you to do this but belive me if you manage to do this you will really make a lot of us really happy…wish you all the best and hopefully you will manage to do dis one day.

Do you remember those duel disks they sold as pretty much promotional items? Well anyways one thing you could do (to avoid buying one to do this) is to look up their specs then make a hollowed out version and fill it with the required hardware once you figure that out.
Again just a suggestion
[Reply]
Hey, first off i love the idea of bringing the full working duel disk to life and i was wandering if or when you will have a working system for someone like to me be able to replicate or if you would be marketing the idea when you think that might happen, looks good so far.
[Reply]
After you finish this, maybe you want to try this to discuss to the big boss in KONAMI. They may want to help you develop this wonderful project because it will really help them to promote the card game. They may also give you some position in the company as the Project Developer of this..
This is just a suggestion anyway… xD

Some details about the duel disk system:
You put the card on the sleeve (monster card in this case). when you put it, first the sistem will read the number that has that card and then look into the database located in a minicomputer inside the duel disk (or may be outside the duel disk like in a satellite or a principal centralized computer). When looking in the database, it has to find the information for that card’s number. when found, the minicomputer will have the atk, def, # stars, name, atribute, type, effects of the monster(for the effects it will be devided into “conditions” and “effects”), if it’s a normal monster, fusion monster (register fusion material mosnters too), ritual, etc. and maybe a picture of the card. With this information on hands of the minicomputer and depending on the card’s monster position (the card reading technology will have to differ between a card in defense position and a card in attack position), the respective hologram will have to be shown on the field in defense position or in attack position. If a want to attack with this monster there could be a button for attacking (another for activating effects, another for activatinf spell/trap effect). When pressing it, the hologram will have to move (here the porjectors work) and the monster will seem to attack. but the attack will have to be directed to a monster in front of the attacking monster or it may be directed to a monster not in front of the attacking monster, but in the right or left, or the attack could be directed to the opponent life points, then, in order to make it seem like if the monster is attacking or going directly to a random position, my duel disk minicomputer or system will have to know the position of the monster i am going to attack or if i am going to attack the opponent directly. i think it will work better with a voice recognition system instead of buttons, but the problem is tha langugae (weather it is enaglish, spanish, japanese) and making your opponent be in silence when you make the voice order and you will have to speak clearly to make the voice recognition system work correctly (and this is where the comunication is important). For example: I put my card, the system reads it and then i say “I attack skull dragon with my monster”, and you press the buttun to attack. then when pressing the attack button that corresponds to your attacking monster, you are telling the system that your monster is going to attack, but the system needs to know who it is going to attack in order to make it seem like your monster is attacking the other monster and not an empty slot in the field and also to make the damage calculation. So for this the voice recognition is necessary, so you have to pronaunce the target monster’s name so in that way the voice recognition system will know who you are attacking and then the monster will go directly to the target.
It is also important that your duel disk system or information that has your duel disk about the cards on the field has to be shared to your opponent’s duel disk system in order to make the interaction that is necesarry to make the calculations or other things. For example, my my computer inside my duel disk has to know the attack and deffense of a monster of my opponnent.
Something else is the sounds, may be the duel disk would have a sound speaker inside and it will have to be synchronized with the holograms.
