That depends on who you ask, but we are finally at that technology level where we can project floating images onto an invisible screen in midair. A Star Wars Hologram has been pursued for decades by many people, trying to relive that epic movie moment in real life.
Want your own projector R2D2 or similar robot? A new technology allows the user to create a particle field midair that allows them to project a Star Wars hologram or other image onto it. The technology is fairly new and still being improved, but the users are letting other inventors and interested people use it and even improve it, you can see the technology here.
What does it all mean? The next time your friends come over to your house and you want to impress them, all you need to do is project Princess Leia as a hologram and you’ll outdo anything they could dream up for probably another 10 years.
Why Star Wars Holograms? Back before Star Trek’s Holodeck, Star Wars had not just one, but two hologram devices. R2D2 was sort of involved with both. The more memorable one (for obvious reason involving a white-cloaked Princess) was from R2D2′s projector. But the 2nd was a game played between Chewbacca and R2D2 on the Millenium Falcon. A sort-of Chess like Game, this game board has a bunch of hologram monsters killing each other.
This game sparked the imaginations of the youth of that generation the possibilities for holograms in gaming. To invent your own holograms, or to watch Princess Leia say “Help Me Obi One Kenobi” a few hundred times in your own home, get the newsletter to be notified when the DIY hologram system is out.
